There are essentially three steps in the brain injury recovery process. The first step is the initial hospitalization period in which the primary focus is on saving the life of the brain injury victim and managing acute medical issues immediately secondary to the injury. The second step is the acute rehabilitation process in which the focus is shifted on to beginning skilled therapy with trained therapists, usually at a lower intensity (1-4 hours a day) while still taking great care to keep stabilized those secondary medical issues as the impact of said issues can often fluctuate substantially in intensity during the early stages of rehabilitation. The third step is post-acute rehabilitation, in which the focus is still on rehabilitating the brain injury, but further attention is paid to adjusting to longer term symptoms of the injury and developing strategies to help cope with permanent deficits left in its wake. The Moody Neurorehabilitation Institute is a post-acute brain injury rehabilitation facility.
Often a post-acute rehabilitation facility will be mistaken for a nursing home or a skilled nursing facility, particularly in Texas as all three types of facilities are licensed here by the same state agency. However, nothing could be further from the truth. At a nursing home or skilled nursing facility opportunities to work with a skilled therapist are relatively limited. At a post-acute rehabilitation facility, the patient’s day is filled with such therapy. At the Moody Neurorehabilitation Institute (TLC), patients will generally work 6-7 hours a day in both individual and structured group sessions with licensed, skilled therapists. These therapies are designed to improve the patients’ functioning by working on underlying skills, helping patients relearn how to perform essential tasks and finding augmentative devices to make managing permanent deficits less burdensome. Even “after hours” daily activities centered on eating, bathing, dressing and hygiene become part of the therapy process. TLC patients are surrounded by therapy challenges from the time they wake until they return to bed. The post-acute brain injury rehabilitation process is an integral yet all too often neglected portion of the path to success for brain injury survivors.
